The AHA makes sure its members' needs are top priority, especially the challenges faced by small or rural hospitals. Through collaboration, representation, education, leadership, and innovation, the AHA identifies and addresses pressing issues affecting rural communities.
In 2023, the CDC established the Office of Rural Health (ORH) to enhance rural public health efforts by coordinating with state, tribal, local, and external partners. The ORH published the CDC's Rural Public Health Strategic Plan that outlines key priorities and objectives to improve health outcomes for rural Americans.
CMS acknowledges the healthcare access challenges faced by over 61 million Americans in rural areas, including provider shortages and infrastructure issues. The CMS Rural Health Cross-Cutting Initiative aims to address these disparities by enhancing the focus on geographically isolated communities within CMS programs and policies. The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) administers grant programs designed to build health care capacity at both the local and state levels. We also coordinate activities related to rural health care within the Department of Health and Human Services and have the department-wide responsibility for analyzing the possible effects of policy on residents of rural communities. The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) is a national nonprofit membership organization that brings together thousands of members across the United States. NOSORH aids State Offices of Rural Health in improving healthcare access and quality for nearly 61 million rural Americans. They bolster state and community rural health leaders, foster partnerships, and enhance access to quality healthcare services in rural areas.

The Rural Health Information Hub, is funded by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy to be a national clearinghouse on rural health issues. We are committed to supporting healthcare and population health in rural communities. The RHIhub is your guide to improving health for rural residents—we provide access to current and reliable resources and tools to help you learn about rural health needs and work to address them.
The Rural Health Research Gateway provides easy and timely access to research conducted by the Rural Health Research Centers, funded by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. The Gateway efficiently puts new findings and information in the hands of our subscribers, including policymakers, educators, public health employees, hospital staff, and more.
The Flex Monitoring Team (FMT) is a group of researchers from three universities, evaluating the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Grant Program. They focus on quality improvement, financial and operational improvement, and community engagement, while maintaining data on Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) and collaborating with other relevant organizations.
